What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient wisdom and can be translated as ‘the science of life and longevity’. It is a holistic healing system recognising the interaction of body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda focusses on healing and maintaining the longevity of life. Ayurveda offers a personalised approach looking at ones individual make up and providing tools how to live according to one’s constitution supported by diet, lifestyle, exercise, relaxation, meditation, breathing exercises and medical herbs.


Why Ayurveda?

This ancient wisdom teaches us to appreciate life in its pure beauty and respect nature by learning to live with the cycles of the season, of the day and of age. Understanding your constitution and leaning into the cycles of mother nature is empowering as you learn to take ownership of your own actions. You will become aware of how everything is connected and constantly influencing one another. Learning to work with the forces of nature rather than resisting it.


Everything we expose ourselves to in our daily lives; family, work, dietary habits, physical health, mental health, spirituality, daily habits and seasonal influences are having a direct effect on our state of health. Ayurveda understands that our own health cannot be separated from those factors and consequently focusses on balancing all aspects.


The 5 Elements and the 3 Doshas

According to Ayurveda we are made up of the five elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space) and individual consciousness. The combination of these form the doshas. Vata Dosha is the combination of Ether & Air, Pitta Dosha of Fire & Water and Kapha Dosha of Earth & Water.

Knowing that we consist of all the above mentioned elements it is safe to say that each person has all three Doshas. Nevertheless every human being has a unique constitution Prakrutiwhich is like the blueprint of ones being. This has been set at the day of conception depending on emotions, genetics, lifestyle and diet of the parents. Consequently the dominance of Doshas in one person varies. Prakruti can be determined by one's physiological and personality traits, as well as general likes and dislikes.

Virkruti looks at the present state of the three doshas in one person. If Virkruti equals Prakruti then the person is in a happy balanced state. However due to diet, lifestyle, emotions, age and environment the Virkruti reflects a different dominance in doshas.
